Procter & Gamble (PG): Q1 FY2027 Earnings Review

Procter & Gamble Company (The)

In brief

Procter & Gamble reported this week as investors rotated into defensive stocks, giving one steady consumer-staples franchise a fresh catalyst without adding another mega-cap technology name to the slate.

Procter & Gamble (PG) reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 results (July–September 2026) on October 22, 2026. Net sales rose 4% to $23.3 billion and core EPS rose 1% to $2.00, beating the $22.8 billion and $1.88 expected (CNBC). Shares jumped 5.58% to $165.59 on October 22, then fell 2.8% to $161.02 on October 23, the stock's $1.0885 ex-dividend date. PG rose 1.05% for the week on price alone, while the S&P 500 ETF fell 0.43%.

What's behind Procter & Gamble's results

1. Volume Did the Work This Quarter

The case is narrow: P&G is running ahead of the guidance it set for itself, and we expect that gap to persist. Organic sales rose 4.0%, with 2.4 points from volume, 1.1 points from mix, and 0.4 points from price. Fabric and home care led on volume at 4.3%. Health care was the laggard, with volume down 2.9%. In fiscal 2026, volume and mix were unchanged for the year.

2. Margins Are the Problem

Margins are where the good news stops. Reported gross margin fell 160 basis points year over year, and core gross margin fell 150 basis points. The decrease came from 140 basis points of higher commodity costs and 140 basis points of product reinvestment. Productivity savings of 120 basis points and 20 basis points of price partly offset that. Core operating margin declined 80 basis points.

3. Guidance Holds and Cash Holds

P&G held fiscal 2027 organic sales growth at 1% to 3%. Core EPS growth guidance stayed at in line to 3%, equal to $6.89 to $7.11 a share. All-in sales guidance rose to 2% to 4%, reflecting the Thorne acquisition that closed October 1. Cash generation held up: operating cash flow was $5.8 billion. The company returned $3.9 billion to shareholders, including $2.6 billion of dividends and $1.3 billion of buybacks.

Historical Context

The trend is turning, but off a weak base. Quarterly net sales ran $22.4 billion, $22.2 billion, $21.2 billion, and $21.2 billion through fiscal 2026, then jumped to $23.3 billion this quarter. Full-year fiscal 2026 net sales rose 3% to $87.0 billion, with 1% organic growth and core EPS up 1% to $6.89. The inflection is at the top line, not yet the bottom.
