Tesla (TSLA): Q3 2026 Earnings Review
Tesla reported third-quarter results after the bell on Wednesday, October 21, for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Revenue was $28.05 billion, flat against $28.10 billion a year earlier. Adjusted earnings came in at $0.48 a share, above the $0.43 analysts polled by LSEG expected. Shares closed at $374.58 on October 22, down 3.08% from the prior day's close. The week ended at $372.22, up 4.9% from the October 16 close of $354.72, while the S&P 500 fell 0.45%.
Why Do We Think Tesla Will Underperform Near Term?
1. The car business is shrinking, and only services are growing
Total revenue was flat, but the segments underneath it moved in opposite directions. Automotive revenue fell 3% to $20.56 billion, and energy revenue dropped 16% to $2.88 billion. Services and other revenue rose 33% to $4.61 billion. Deliveries were 486,532 vehicles, about 2% below a year ago. The quarter's growth came from the services line, not from selling more cars.
2. Gross margin improved, but operating income collapsed
Gross profit rose 8.7% to $5.49 billion and gross margin reached 19.59%, up from 17.99% a year earlier. Operating income, however, fell 56% to $718 million from $1,624 million, and operating margin dropped to 2.56% from 5.78%. The gap between those two lines is where the money went. Operating expenses rose about 39% to $4.78 billion from $3.43 billion.
3. Spending guidance was cut, but free cash flow fell 62%
On the earnings call, Tesla put 2026 capital spending at about $20 billion, down from more than $25 billion. Third-quarter capital spending was $4.73 billion, more than double the $2.25 billion a year earlier. Free cash flow was $1.53 billion, down 62% from $3.99 billion, after running negative in the second quarter. Tesla also said active FSD subscriptions rose 67% year over year to 1.74 million, a count that also includes upfront purchases.
Historical Context
A year of flat revenue has come with falling profit. Revenue was $28.10 billion in Q3 2025, $24.90 billion in Q4, and $22.39 billion in Q1 2026. It came in at $28.24 billion in Q2 and $28.05 billion in Q3. Operating margin ran 5.8%, 5.7%, 4.2%, 1.4%, and 2.6% across those five quarters. Gross margin has already recovered, from 16.83% in Q2 to 19.59% in Q3.
